Installed my eSIM before flying but still no internet after landing in Italy

I installed the eSIM at home and it shows as active in my settings, but I've been in Rome for two hours and still have no internet. I tried switching airplane mode on and off but nothing changed. What am I missing?

The most common cause is that the line is installed but not selected for data, so please check that your eSIM is set as the default line for mobile data and that data roaming is switched on for it. If that's already done, toggle airplane mode on for a full 30 seconds and let it reconnect to the local network.

Same thing happened to me in Florence and it turned out my phone was still using my home SIM for data. Once I set the eSIM as the data line it connected within a minute.

Mine took about ten minutes to latch onto a network after landing, so give it a little time before panicking. Also make sure you're not connected to some airport wifi that's blocking everything.

Please also confirm the plan was actually activated, since some eSIMs only start their validity on first connection to a network in the destination. If it still won't connect, manually select a network in your settings and try each operator one by one until data comes through.

I fixed mine by restarting the phone completely rather than just airplane mode. Sounds silly but it worked instantly.

Check your APN settings too, my Android needed the APN entered manually and then it worked fine across Italy. Worth a look if nothing else helps.

Had the exact same issue in Milan and it was data roaming being off. Turned it on and everything loaded right away.

If you're on an older phone, double check it supports the bands used in Italy. Mine didn't and I had to use a spare device instead.
