Will my eSIM work in rural areas of New Zealand like Fiordland or the East Cape?

I'm planning a road trip through some of New Zealand's more remote areas, including Fiordland and the East Cape. I rely on my phone for navigation and emergencies, so I need to know if my eSIM will have coverage there. Will it work, or should I prepare for no signal?

I traveled through the East Cape last year with an eSIM and coverage was spotty at best. In towns like Te Araroa you'll get signal, but on the remote stretches between them expect nothing.

Fiordland is basically a dead zone once you leave Te Anau. Even local SIMs struggle there, so download offline maps before you go.

Our eSIMs connect to major New Zealand networks, which cover most towns and highways, but remote areas like Fiordland and the East Cape have limited or no coverage. For safety, always download offline maps and carry a personal locator beacon if you're heading deep into the backcountry.

I found that even with full signal in some rural areas, data speeds were slow. Be patient and stick to basic tasks like messaging.

If you're on the East Cape, the only reliable spot I found was at the i-SITE in Opotiki. Everywhere else was hit or miss.

To add to Sara's answer, our coverage map shows strong signal along State Highway 1 and in most towns, but mountainous regions often block signals. We recommend checking your specific route on our coverage page before you travel.

I used a different eSIM provider and had the same issues, so it's not just your service. Rural NZ just doesn't have the infrastructure.

Don't rely on your phone for emergencies in those areas. A satellite messenger is a worthwhile investment if you're going off the beaten path.
