Installing my first eSIM for Japan before I fly - when does it actually start?

I've never used an eSIM before and I just bought a Japan plan for my trip next week. I'm nervous about installing it wrong or burning data before I even land. Should I install it at home, and how do I make sure it only activates when I arrive in Tokyo?

Yes, install it at home while you have stable wifi, but keep the line turned off until you land. Your plan's validity starts when it first connects to a network in Japan, not at installation, so nothing is used up before you arrive.

Did exactly this on my first trip and it worked fine. I installed it the night before, left it off, then just flipped it on after landing and had data within a minute.

One tip that saved me: label it something obvious like 'Japan data' so you don't confuse it with your home SIM in the settings. Also screenshot the QR code before you leave in case you need it again.

If you're on iPhone, go to Settings then Cellular and make sure the Japan line isn't set as your default for calls or messages. Keep your normal SIM as primary for calls and just switch mobile data over to the eSIM after you land.

I was nervous too but it's genuinely easier than expected. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only, that part matters and people forget it.

Airport wifi in Tokyo is reliable enough to sort anything out on arrival if needed. I activated mine in the arrivals hall and it connected before I even got to the train.

Just don't delete the eSIM after your trip if you think you might go back, you can often top it up again rather than buying a new one.

Seconding the roaming toggle point, I spent twenty confused minutes at Narita wondering why nothing loaded. Flipped roaming on and it was instant.
