How good is eSIM coverage in rural areas of New Zealand?

I'm planning a road trip through the South Island, including places like Milford Sound and the West Coast. Will my eSIM TopUp plan work reliably in these remote areas, or should I expect no signal? Any tips for staying connected off the beaten path?

Our eSIMs connect to major NZ networks like Spark, Vodafone, and 2degrees, which cover most towns and highways. However, in remote areas like Milford Sound and parts of the West Coast, coverage can be spotty or nonexistent. We recommend downloading offline maps and checking the network coverage maps for specific areas before you travel.

I drove the South Island last year and had signal in most towns, but once you get into the mountains, it drops. Milford Sound had no signal at all, so download your maps and music beforehand.

Surprisingly, I got decent coverage on the West Coast near Franz Josef and Fox Glacier, but it was very patchy on the road between them. The eSIM worked fine whenever there was signal.

To add to Sara's answer: coverage in rural NZ is improving but still limited in national parks and remote valleys. If you're relying on connectivity for navigation, consider a backup like a personal locator beacon or satellite messenger for safety.

I found that having an eSIM was great because I could easily top up when I did have signal. Just be prepared for dead zones; it's part of the adventure!

If you're going to Milford Sound, there's no coverage on the drive or at the sound itself. But the eSIM worked perfectly in Te Anau, the last town before the sound.

I used an eSIM TopUp plan on the North Island and had good coverage even in some rural areas like the Coromandel. But the South Island is definitely more remote. Check the coverage map on the eSIM TopUp site.

No signal in Fiordland at all, but that was expected. The eSIM was reliable in all the towns and cities. Just don't expect to stream videos in the backcountry.
