First eSIM trip to Japan: install at home or wait until landing?

Question

I am heading to Tokyo next month and have never used an eSIM before. Should I install and activate the plan before I fly, or wait until I land at Narita? I want to make sure it works with my regular SIM still in the phone for calls and texts.

Install the eSIM profile before you fly, but leave the line turned off until you land. That way the QR code is scanned while you still have reliable home Wi-Fi, and it will activate automatically when it connects to a Japanese network.

If your phone supports dual SIM, you can label the lines so you don't mix them up. I named mine Home and Japan, and switching data was obvious.
